Social Binges on Intermittent Fasting Diets

Fad diets have come a long way since Atkins and Paleo. The latest trimming trend sweeping the world is intermittent fasting, in which adherents either fast for one day regularly or eat only during restricted hours.

Recent studies suggest that fasting can help people lose weight, but others have found serious reasons to be skeptical. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, unhealthy LDL cholesterol increased significantly after 12 months among some practitioners.

Despite that risk, 70 percent of social media users think fasting is the future of weight loss. Even if cholesterol increases, another study by Wayne Jonas, executive director of Samueli Integrative Health Programs, found that dieters showed improved alertness and attention and lower risk of illness after adopting intermittent fasting. Jonas also found that those fasting thought more carefully before ordering food.
